WOMAN FAKED KIDNAPPING IN INDIA TO GET HER MOTHER’S MONEY

An American woman was arrested in India for allegedly faking her own kidnapping, in order to get money from her parents.

She was identified as 27-year-old Chloe McLaughlin. According to  authorities, she allegedly lied to her parents and told them she was being assaulted by a man in New Delhi on July 7. Three days later, she spoke with her mother via WhatsApp video call, but ended the call as soon as someone else entered the room.

Because of her safety, McLaughlin’s parents contacted the U.S. Embassy, which traced the IP address of the video call. Local authorities found McLaughlin with a 31-year-old Nigerian man whom she had met on Facebook. They arrested both individuals, and McLaughlin reportedly confessed to staging her own kidnapping.

“After her rescue, it was revealed that she had staged the incident to blackmail her parents,” New Delhi's deputy commissioner of police told the Indian Express.

The specific charges the duo will be facing are not immediately clear but, according to the BBC, both will face legal action for staying in India with expired travel documents.
